Extension of energy labeling helps consumers and climate

Euro-MPs on the European Parliament's Industry Committee have backed proposals to widen the list of products covered by the EU energy efficiency labeling scheme.

Currently, the A to G labeling scheme (A being the best performance, G being the worst) covers appliances such as freezers and washing machines, and is soon to be extended to other products which can potentially waste energy if badly designed. This includes televisions and household fixtures such as shower heads and windows.

Liberal Democrat MEP for London Sarah Ludford said:

"Energy efficiency is not only essential to protect the environment and cut CO2 emissions, but at a time when we're all watching our budgets it's also a great money-saving exercise."

"MEPs rightly decided to keep the A to G approach as it is widely recognised and understood. Technology is improving all the time so it would be good to see a date on the A to G label too."

"I support their call that in future, information about energy usage should be included not only on the label at point of sale but also in any advert giving technical data."
